Jersey Banks
The Island of Jersey is one of the Canal Islands, located between England and France. It is a dependent of the British Crown, although it actually is self-governing. The British are responsible for its foreign affairs, including negotiations with the European Union. Jersey’s economy is dominated by the financial sector. Unemployment is very low. The island’s political stability, combined with low taxes and its international reputation as a reliable financial center have converted the island into an attractive site for foreign investors. Jersey’s main strengths are it banking sectors, investment funds and trust funds. Jersey’s government reported at the end of 2011 that 40 banks accredited there held deposits valued at 158,087 billion of Jersey Pounds. There are a series of business formats applied in Jersey, with low taxes, including International Trade Companies; Non-Profit Organizations and Limited Partnerships. Nonetheless, in concordance with the compromise adopted by Jersey before the European Council of Ministers of Finance, the island has declared that it will no longer accept the formation of new international Trade Companies.
In May of 2002 Jersey, together with the other British dependents, such as Guernsey and the Island of Man, agreed to sign the European regimen for the exchange of fiscal information. At present, Jersey has improved its credibility before the international community ad is a more transparent territory, thanks to a new Agreement for the exchange of fiscal information which allows it to improve its reputation as an offshore financial center.
